About the photograph: Urmia Lake in the north of Iran, which was once the largest lake in the Middle East second largest salt lake on the planet. Lake has lost about 88 percent of its surface area during the past three decades due to water mismanagement after the Iran-Iraq war and climatic changes. Women swim in a shallow pond that is a remnant of Lake Urmia. They walk almost two miles from the former beach to the pond several times each summer to bathe in the natural saltwater. 2014
